I came across this in a magazine after trying to do the same thing at home with a real egg. After seeing this, I decided to buy some of these too try the whole egg thing at home too.

They come in a variety of shapes as well such as a frog and a monkey. They even have some holiday versions shaped like a pumpkin and a snowman. They run about $10 dollars a piece but they are reusable unlike a fragile egg shell.

I like tea. I say I drink a fair amount of tea during the week. I usually use tea bags simply for convience sake, and loose tea when I have more time. Then I found this. Netbooks! And Why I Won't Get One

Recently, the big craze coming at us is the new Netbooks. For those who don't know what a Netbook is here is what Wikipedia says about them:

"A netbook is a small portable laptop computer designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet.

Primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing, netbooks rely heavily on the Internet for remote access to web-based applications" and are targeted increasingly at cloud computing users who require a less powerful client computer. Netbooks typically run either Windows XP or Linux operating systems rather than more resource-intensive operating systems like Windows Vista. The devices range in size from below 5 inches to over 13, typically weigh 2 to 3 pounds (~1 kg) and are often significantly cheaper than general purpose laptops ($400), with some even in the $50–100 range under some circumstances."

All this sounds great. And hey, who wouldn't want to be connected wherever they go? Well, me for one. Why? Simple. I already have cell phone that keeps me connected to everyone everywhere ALL the time. "A cell phone isn't as good as the actual Internet on a actual!" you say. And this is true. Cellphones have small keyboards and all the other obvious negatives that laptops don't have. However both the cellphone and portable laptops have some draw backs that you don't hear about.

What could those possibly be you ask? Society. Stay with me on this one. It's going some place.

What I mean by society is this, we don't seem to have one. Sure it seems as though everyone knows everyone and we can get in touch with people everywhere at anytime. But do we really want too? Truly, do you really want to meet that friend from FaceBook in person? And does playing hours of online gaming with people from around the wold constitute mental or physical exercise?

Don't get me wrong, I have friends I only know from gaming and online. But unfortunately you can't really call those people 'friends'. Ask yourself how many 'real life friends' do you have? Meaning people you can call if you need help moving or someone to pick you up after a long night out you'll regret later. And your answer is?

"So where is this all headed" you ask. "I thought this was about NetBooks for Pete's sake!" Here it is, all this new technology is truly great. It means for those who need to keep in touch for business sake have a great new tool for business. What about the rest of us? Do we really need to check our e-mail in the car before we pick up milk? Do you really need to be online if you are waiting in line at the post office?

Most of you will be reading this at home in a room setup just for computer time. And when computer time is done, you have family time. May that be eating together, playing together, arguing together or even just watching tv together. Would any of that be as fun if you isolated yourself with being connected?

So before you get too connected, try connecting with the world around you first. You may find you can get up to date information from...your friend.

Alright, I admit I'm late to the party on this one. I've had this game for a while now and haven't really put too much time into until recently. And I have to tell you I wish I never did.

Now I'm not unintelligent. I think I have a few brain cells roaming around up there that can find there way around. But when ever I play this game I swear those few rogue smart cells I have seem to head for the hills. Even the simpliest puzzles have me breaking out in a cold sweat. I almost for got how to open a door.

Needless to say I am slightly addicted. However I refuse to cheat! Even though there are times I have to break out a pen and paper and figure out the answers, I do it on my own darnit! Sure I feel like a joke when like 5 year old taunt me and tell me they learned basic math in like the womb, but I still try!

So for those of you out there that like puzzle type games and haven't come across this one yet, I highly recommend it.

My New Love: BENTO!

Yes! Bento rules! For those of you who don't know what bento is here's what Wikipedia says it is:"Bentō (弁当 or べんとう ) is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish."

Okay, so nothing I make looks this cool, but I'm trying. I found out about bento from where else? Manga and asian dramas...just like everyone else I know. Though trying to make bento is fun, it is very time consuming. And seeing as I live in the US, going traditional is a little hard.

What I do istead is what most of the bento/food websites suggest. I try to pack my stuff at night from leftovers. It usually works out pretty good and there's no wasting food. Again, my food never looks as good as the picture above, I'm usually happy with what I do. And seeing as I eat low carb, packing all that rice just doesn't cut it. Maybe as time goes on and I get better at packing this stuff, I try a small side blog for those who want to bento, but are low carb.

Asian TV Dramas could be compared to American soap operas. Unlike American soap operas, Korean TV dramas last any where from 1 to 50 episodes. These dramas have become popular throughout Asia, and are part of the "Korean Wave". South Korean dramas seem to be most popular Korean, though North Korean dramas have become popular in Japan.

Some internationally popular Korean dramas are My Lovely Sam-Soon, Winter Sonata, Full House and Stairway to Heaven. The majority of the plot lines in these these shows usually involve conflicts dealing with relationships, money, and most often, with in-laws (usually between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law). Issues that are universal no matter what culture you are from.

Kamakaze Girls and NANA

The latest manga to movie adaptions are real treats!

Kamakaze Girls and Nana are both highly popular mangas in Japan. Recently these two mangas are being released in their translated form to the US. Both manga titles are being released through VIZ, Entertainment.

The Beginners Guide to Scanlation

Within the last year in the U.S. an interesting new phenomenon has emerged: wide spread interest in manga. Even more interesting is the availiability of manga at your local book stores, such as Barnes and Noble and Borders Books (which is partnered with Amazon.com)

For those new to the genre, manga is the Japanese word for comics. They are considered graphic novels in the U.S. However, if you are reading this you already know what manga is. You have probably read through your local book stores entire english translated department. Now you are ready for more. However, you don't know where to get new titles.

Unfortunatley, all the titles that sit on your book store shelves are really all that are available in the American market. Though that may be the case, there is still a way to get your hands on some unreleased manga.

That's where a scanlation group comes in. A scanlation group basically takes untranslated and unlicenced (in American markets) manga comics and scans, translates and edits the manga. They then post it via various outlets to other manga fans through the internet. Though 'scanlating' still floats in the grey area of copying licensed material, most manga artists and/or their publishing houses give these groups a little pass. No one is really sure why these publishers seem to turn a blind eye to scanlation. Many believe it's because these groups help to promote thier manga and their artists to a market that they would otherwise not be exposed to. There are even some American publishing houses that admit that they take their que from the popularity of what they see among these scanlation groups as to which manga to try to license in America.

Due to the fact that scanlation is still in the somewhat grey area of the law, direct links to specific scanlations groups will not be listed here. However a simple search for scanlation, scanlation groups, scanlators on the internet and some patience will guide you to what you may be looking for.

Asian Kung Fu Generation Releases in America

Japan's super popular alternative rock band Asian Kung Fu Generation (Japanese site) is getting more western exposure courtesy of Tofu Records.

The band that formed in 1996 as university students, first starting writing their songs in english and sold them at their live concerts. As the band evolved they began to compose songs in Japanese. The release of their first all Japanese compliations, the band recieved great success among live music houses. It was with the "Houkai Amplifier" their first major release that brought them into the Japanese spotlight.

Tofu Records has announced that announced the American release of Asian Kung Fu Generation's Japanese Sol-fa. So please check it out!

Ever heard of Samhain? All Hallowtide? The Feast of All Soula? The Celts who lived on what is now known as Ireland, Scotland and parts of Great Britain sure did.

According to Celticspirit.org:

"Samhain marks one of the two great doorways of the Celtic year, for the Celts divided the year into two seasons: the light and the dark, at Beltane on May 1st and Samhain on November 1st. Some believe that Samhain was the more important festival, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, just as the Celtic day began at night. For it was understood that in dark silence comes whisperings of new beginnings, the stirring of the seed below the ground. Whereas Beltane welcomes in the summer with joyous celebrations at dawn, the most magically potent time of this festival is November Eve, the night of October 31st, known today of course, as Halloween."

In short, Samhain was the Celtic New Year.

Celts also believed that the dead passed on to a land of eternal youth and happiness known as Tir nan Og or dwelled with the 'Fairy Folk'. The Festival of Samhain was a important turning point, when all things met. Day and night, one year turning into the next. It was at this time when the veil between the living and the dead were believed to be the thinnest. Thus the living could communicate with their past loved ones.

The belief of heaven and hell was introduced with the intergration of Christianity to Celtic life. Since the 'Fairy Folk' where seen as niether angels or demons by Christians, it was believed that they were the spirits now doomed to waunder the earth. Most especially on the Festival of Samhain. It was also during this time when people would go about creating mischief that was niether in this year of the next.

These human mischief makers would impersonate fairies and go from farm to farm begging for for treats. Those who did not comply soon found themselves at the end of a practical joke. Thus the practice of 'trick or treating' was born.

The introduction of Halloween to the United States can be traced back to the great Potato Famine of Ireland. When a huge population of Irish brought with them hopes for a new future and all their beliefs both Christain and Celtic.

Today we celebrate Halloween with bright costumes, ghost stories and candy. Though the origins of Halloween are unknown to most, the Celtic tradition has been passed on to generations of Trick or Treaters.

Memoirs of a Geisha Movie Adaptaion

They are also usually printed in monochrome tones rather than in color.

Shojo (show-joe) means "girl" in Japanese. Shojo manga are often characterized by a moody, abstract art style, with close-ups of characters' faces intermingling with dreamy backdrops. In contrast to action-oriented shonen (boys') manga, shojo manga ruminate on themes of emotion, love, identity, and responsibility that often play out internally. That said, shojo manga are by no means just for girls. Shojo stories are about aspects of life that concern everyone—boys and girls, old and young. Note: The word shojo normally appears with a circumflex or macron over the first o, as in shôjo; we removed it for the sake of simplicity and readability in the magazine.

Tankobon are books compiled from installments of a single manga story. These books are pocket-size and paperback, and like this magazine, they read from right to left. In the United States, tankobon are usually referred to as graphic novels. You can find them in the graphic novel, manga, or science fiction section of major bookstores.

San Diego Comic Con 2005

As with every year the San Diego Comic Con International (CCI) just seems to get bigger and better. The Comic Con is the largest comics and pop culture convention in North America. This event is held once a year for four days (this year held July 14-17) not including the pre-registered Preview Night. The official four days of the Comic Con are hetic with every single room and floor of the San Diego Convention Center's packed with vendors, exhibitors, guests and of course fans.

The first unoffical day ofthe Comic Con called the Preview Night. This is a time set aside for all of the prerigistered attendees to get a sneak pick at all the goodies that will be there throughout the four day event. It's also the time that many attendees anticipate with glee because of the sheer volume of free and exclusive to the Comic Con merchandise given away by the exhibitors. Things such as posters, t-shirts, action figures and even movie passes to see advanced screening of unreleased movies.

Along with the comic books and memorabilia many fans come to Comic Con to see some of thier favortie stars. Many major movie studios send out either/or the cast, crew of their upcoming movie releases. It is also a time when comic book houses send out their artist and writers as well. A few of the special guests that attended this years convention were Charlize Theron (Aeon Flux), Kate Bekinsale(Underworld 2 :Evolution), Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), Kevin Smith, the cast of Serinity and Bruce Campbell(The Wan with the Screaming Brain). Comic book super star artists Jim Lee (DC Comics), Jae Lee (Marvel Comics), Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim) and Phil Jimenez (DC Comics).

The artists and merchandise are not the only appeal for this convention. People from all over the world attend this convention. Just a few nations represented by fan attendence, Canada, Australia, America, England and France. All of which were equally wide-eyed and excited by the sheer amount of cosplayers, stars and other fans, and that roamed the convention room floor. Among the stars that could be found wandering the the convention floor were Seth Green and Elizabeth Berkley. Seth was there promoting his joint comic creation The Freshman.

Though the official numbers have yet to be released David Glanzer, the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for CCI stated "actually we only just got the figures," according to an article in CBR News- Comic Book Resources. However, they did expect to have attendece top the 100,000 mark. This year the attendee numbers looked to be about 96,300 attendees and 7,700 exhibitors. Totaling out at 104,000 indiviual people that were present at the Comic Con.

The Comic Con 2006 line up of guests and programming has not yet to be announced. For those of you who are interested in helping out in the next convention are welcome to send in a volunteer form.

Using the PSP for Anime and Manga

In the July issue of NewType Magazine USA contained an article about using Sony's PSP to download manga and anime.(Quite frankly I feel DUMB for not thinking about it myself.)

The article states that anime UMD's are being released, like Samurai Champloo and Appleseed.It also mentions companys like Seven Seas and Eigo Manga are making chapters of there mangas downloadable for the PSP.

After reading this article I downloaded one of my fav mangas (not availiable in USstores)to my PSP and had a great time reading it over lunch!

Tim Burton fans rejoice. The avant-garde director is at it again with his upcoming release of 'The Corpse Bride'.

The two stop to rest in the woods, and as a joke, Victor puts his wedding ring on a finger-shaped stick in the ground and says his wedding vows. The huge cult followers of The Nightmare Before Christmas's stop motion animation won't be let down. The teaser trailer shows the art form to be both smooth and aethetically lovely, with the heaviest touch of Tim Buton's dark charm.

'HOT GIMMICK'...sizzles

Hatsumi is just your average Japanese high school kid. She lives happily with her family in a 'Company housing complex' (housing owned and run for company employees). Until one day her younger sister asks her to buy a pregnancy test. From that moment on Hatsumi's world gets turned upside down.

While trying to keep all the gossip mongers from finding out about her sister, her childhood crush suddenly returns to live their complex. Then to top it all off, she gets blackmailed by the complex manager's son into becoming he's slave.

From start to finish Hot Gimmick's art is beautful. Mangaka* Miki Aihara blends real world backdrops with her art work. It gives the manga a feel of substance to it. In truth, the art work has to be above standard, since the story is above standard as well. The storyline goes exactly where you see it heading, then totally throws you for a loop eveytime you think you're about to get some satisfaction.

For those of you addicted to Parfait Tic!, Gekka no Kimi, and You're So Cool this manga is the next logical step.

Get the Funk Out

When Samurai Champloo was released, it was nothing short of a breath of fresh air. With the acclaimed director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Beebop) and character design by Kazuto Nakazawa (animation sequence from KILL BILL VOL. 1) great things where expected from this anime. And indeed, it has turned out to be one of the hottest DVD releases in the US.

The first pressing release of Samurai Champloo Vol. 1 was accompanied by the original soundtrack. The OST* to Samurai Champloo is outstanding. With a electic mix of hip-hop soundtracks from Force of Nature, fat jon, Nujabes and TSUTCHIE. There's nothing out there like it.

For those who are into anime OST this one is a must. And for those who can't get enough of the soundtrack, there are four other supplemental CD's that were released.

Arm yourself for Full METAL Panic!

For you newbies out there not fimilar with anime, don't let the name fool you. Full METAL Panic! is one of the most entertaining and addictive animes out there. This anime series is highly recommended for those who aren't too sure what to dive into first.

Shoujo For Dummies

Shoujo : 少女【しょうじょ】 (n.) daughter; young lady; virgin; maiden; little girl.

Shoujo anime and manga traditionally tend to focus mainly on relationships of the main characters and the development of those characters. It is a visual and storytelling style. In otherwords, shoujo is aimed at a female audience.

There are many sub-genres to shoujo, but by far the most prevolent is mahou shoujo or "magical girl". Manga-ka Yuu Watase a great example, with such titles as Ceres: Celestial Legend, Alice 19th, and Fushigi Yuugi. These stories involve a normal young high school girl who finds out there's more to her than she thinks.

Another branch of shoujo is called yaoi. This deals with strong homo-sexual themes based on men. An example is the manga Gravitation, which later spawned an anime. Though at first glance, this genre is not one that most would find to be a popluar sub-genre. However, it is now one of the fastest growing genres in manga. Yaoi, which is usually populated by 'bishounen' or 'beautiful boys' also known as 'bishies'. It may be because of this that many women are drawn toward this type of manga.

There is also a side genre known as 'cross-gender'. Almost all of these titles entail a young girl who dresses like a male in order to get close to the man she's interested in. One of the most popular manga of this type is Hana Kimi. It's the story about a young Japanese-American girl who wishes to get close to her idol, a high jump star. The only problem is he lives in Japan and attends and all boys private school. Thus, she transforms herself into a boy in order to attend the school he goes to. Hana Kimi is one of the most beloved mangas out there. With some of the best 'bishie' characters around.

Simply all shoujo manga is basically this: a love story filled with longing, heart ache and bishounen.

For those of you who have been living underground, the PSP is Sony's next evolution in hand held gaming. They didn't just try to improve upon what they already had, they decided to reinvent "the wheel".

With a hefty price tag the PSP does not seem to be aimed at the younger market. It does, however, seem to be perfect for young families always on the go. With the 4.3-inch, 16:9 wide screen TFT LCD it's could easily accomodate viewing for two people. This comes in handy, since the PSP can play UMD's(Universal Media Disc) a high optical disc. Meaning that it can play full length movies, such as Spiderman 2 which is included. Not to mention it allows for digital photo display and supports digital music playback in both MP3 and ATRAC formats.

First and foremost it's a gaming system. Games such as Wipeout Pure, Untold Legends, Ape Escape and Tiger Woods Golf are outstanding examples of why PSP is a great gaming experience. Not to mention the full rich audio tracks. (When used with earphones.)

The bottom line? It's not just hype. Go get one.

Get Yourself Enrolled at 'Cromartie High School'...Punk

If you like Conan O'Brien, Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, and yes even Buffy the Vampire Slayer raise you hand. If you don't, then move on. We have no time for you joyless prolls.

Alright for those of you still here, rejoice. If you have shunned away from anime and manga, this is the time to ignore all of your misgivings. Cromartie High School is quite possibly one of the funniest animes out there. One could even go as far as to say this show could hang toe to toe with The Simpsons. Check out this clip.

"Folks, meet Takashi Koyama. Enrolled at Cromartie High, where everybody is a delinquent, Koyama is apparently the only non-delinquent in the school. Logically, therefore, he must be the toughest in his class - by the rather twisted logic that only a really tough rabbit would lie down with lions. Thus begins a story that parodies every cliché of tough-guy anime that you've ever heard of, and some you haven't. Oh, and Freddie Mercury is in it, too."~Anime News Network

Some people may find this type of humor a bit to wacky or just plain over their head. It's a show that makes fun of it's self, it's characters, the genre and dearly wishes for you to buy the manga. (The lead character mentions it a few times in the anime.) Don't let something this refreshing pass you by.

Artists You Must Discover

With the music scene recently flooding with such artist as Kelly Clarkson, 50 Cent and yes fans, even your beloved U2, there seems to be no REAL artists left. In the ocean of never ending artists, it's hard to find a artist worth drowning for. Imagine the surprise of finding two.

Why Jack Johnson isn't on the lip of everyone around is beyond me. Then again it could simply because he would rather be surfing and playing his gutiar on a beach somewhere than actually promoting his music. For those who don't know of him yet, Jack Johnson is one talented artist. Simply listening to his music makes you yearn for a patch of beach. This artist literally sings to keep up his lifestyle as a sufer.

Amos Lee, a former schoolteacher, could be called the male counterpart of Norah Jones. His songs are both soulful and blues bitten mixed in with folk sounds. Though just breaking out into the mainstream, this artist has some very soothing yet thought provking songs on his new album which is worth a listen or two.

Anime DVD Recommendation of the Week

For those of you still on the fence about anime, this week's recommendation The Big O is for you.

Don't be distracted by the title. This anime series that is being aired on the Cartoon Network's AdultSwim is truly thought provoking and at times just down right confusing. Just try to follow the series description:

"The principal character of Big O is Roger Smith, a professional freelance negotiator, but the added twist on the show is the fact that he is also the pilot of an enigmatic giant robot known as a megadeus. Big O is set in Paradigm City, a domed metropolis with a mixture of futuristic and contemporary features. According to the manga, nothing exists outside the city. Forty years before Roger's time, a mysterious occurrence known only as The Event completely wiped out the memories of the isolated city's inhabitants. There are few clues as to what exactly took place during that fateful moment, and it forced the people of Paradigm to start anew, severed ties and all; this mystery is a central feature of the show. The Event's lingering mysteries still haunt the Negotiator in nearly every case, and don't seem to stop, even after 'we have come to terms'. The Event has been theorized by many and seems to rear its head in every adventure unraveled before Roger, his android housemate R. Big O has spawned so many chat rooms, theorists and just plan cult followers, that though the show only ran for two seasons, there are still rabid veiwers. Trying to decipher the series is horrendous...yet it keeps you coming back for more.

First of all if you have no idea what the above picture is about...turn around now and go away. You obviously are not 'hip enough' to deal with this situation. What's that? You want to know what the 'cool thing' is? Sweet. Then grab a glass of chill and read on my brother from another mother.

Long story short, Cartoon Network has a block of programming aimed specifically at adults. Thus, the aptly titled AdultSwim. The programming runs a mixture of anime (FullMetal Alchemist, Big O, Wicth Hunter Robin), orginal programming(Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost Coast to Coast) and some syndicated programming (Family Guy, Futurama). However, that is far the the enitre line up.

All of the shows are quick witted, mind numbing and at time just plain...gross. Don't let this dissuade you from watching though. For example, ever thought a walking, talking milkshake was funny? Take it from me...it is. What about the intellectual side? Just plop down and try to mull over all the metaphors and symbolism in just one episode of the mecha anime Big O. And if you can't laugh at Family Guy...well quite frankly there's something wrong with you.

So, are you tired of network TV? Are you sick to death of Friends reruns, any and all 'reality TV'? Ever wonder just how many times a week you can watch CSI Vegas, CSI NY...CSI Disneyland...CSI WALMART, or whatever new reincarnation of that series is on? Then come the the oasis my friend.

While trudging through the 100+ channels on my cable service, (most of which I have yet to have time to view) I happened across this program. The scene before me was of two Asian guys. One with a stone blank look on his face, the other saying this:"Dude, so do Koreans have a word for pop-lockin'? Hip-hiping? What about 'izzle'?"

This was my first intro to a little show called EGG West Coast. I haven't been so amused by anything in a long time. And can you believe it? I found it on The International Channel.

"EGG WestCoast, a video magazine program, explores the Korean American experience. Compelling stories, investigative pieces, and witty entertainers bring to life what it means to be Korean American. Every program features a comedy segment with the hilarious duo of Hahn Cho as Jim and Gary Choi as James. Laugh with them as they try to learn the Korean alphabet and the secrets of making kimchi on their journey to discover their Korean roots."~Taken from the International Website.

Ever heard of the phrase "You had to be there to get it?" That's exactly what this show is. Though the show does focus mainly on the Korean-American culture, it has produced some rather intriguing pieces. One such piece introduced singer/ song writer Ken Oak. They also produce pieces based in the arts, including muscians, artists (one of which was a 'graffiti artist' on the run) spoken word artists and actors. Along with topics such as journalism, Asian medicine and culture.

Not to outdone, is the duo of Jim and James (Hahn Cho and Gary Choi). Why the public at large has not heard about these two is beyond me. Jim(Hanh Cho who is a producer on the show) is the mouth piece of the two, while James(Gary Choi also a producer) sits back with a vacant disinterested look on his face...never saying a word. They hang out with Koreans chefs, try to learn Korean from a French woman who teaches Korean, attend tiny insignificant parades and so on.

Let's just get to the point: I read The DaVinci Code. Though based mainly on deciphering Iconography, for those of you who have read it, the following will not be new to you. Hopefully, however, some things will be interesting to find out about. Admittedly, I am no expert on the topic, I am merely a Touch-Topic amateur. However, what I have gleaned about the subject fascinates me.

The first thing that should be said, is that cryptology has a long and storied past. The oldest type of code are now refered to as classical cryptography which were most likely done with a simple pencil and paper or even simple puzzles. However, as time has progressed so has encryption. Presently, codes can be borken down into main groups: transposition ciphers, where you can rearrange word order to achieve an answer and substitution ciphers where replacing groups of letters with others achieves an answer.

Though there are enumerous codes both simple and electronic out there, all of which are intriguing on there own, the most intriguing code I've ever heard of is sitting on the grounds of the CIA poised as a sculpture called Kryptos. A sculture made of metal and petrified wood sits unbroken and is a means of frustration to many amateur code breakers everywhere. Though the parts of it that have been deciphered are amazingly curious and creepy. Done by design or for effect, the appeal of Kryptos is unmistakable.

The following is meant as a base beginners insight into a deep and rich field of study that is the playground of some of th most brilliant minds in the world.

Cryptography for Dummies, the title says it all, but this a nice basic overview for beginners.
Classical and Contemporary Cryptology, this book gives a histroic background into code breaking. It also comes with software for a real hands on experience.
The DaVinci Code has quite simply reintroduced the world to both classical code breaking and iconology decipher all by using master artists as a back drop.(NOTE: Please purchase the hard cover format of this book. Then try the online challenge)
Introduction to Cryptography with Coding Theory though this book assumes you know at least basic math and understand algorithms, still a good beginner reference.
Cryptonomicon by the Neal Stephenson author of Snowcrash. From start to finish just a great book.

Please keep in mind these are some very basic titles. Though not meant to make you an expert by any means, they will help you to enjoy and appreciate all those people sitting in the math lab.

A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly is based on a Phillip K. Dick novel of the same name, Keanu Reevse stars as Bob Arctor...yet another anti-hero.

"Set in a future world where America has lost the war on drugs, an undercover cop, Fred, is one of many agents hooked on the popular drug Substance D, which causes its users to develop split personalities. The prospect of this movie fascinates me. The cell-shaded movie looks exceptionally close to to video game XII. Above all...it's a Phillip K. Dick novel. For those of you who don't know who this is, maybe a little story called Blade Runner will help. Let's just hope that audiences are ready for this radically new way of filming. Then again, they probably said that about the first Matrix movie.

As of the time I wrote this, I was unable to find much about this moive. Not even a official site. So for now, these links are the best I can do to pass along information.

Anime DVD Recommendation of the Week

If you aren't really sure that anime is for you, then I highly recommend Samurai Champloo. From the director of Cowboy Beebop and more widely known for the animation sequence in Kill Bill Vol 1., the long awaited Shinichiro Watanabe's next endeavour is worth the wait.

"Mugen's a buck wild warrior - violent, thoughtless and womanizing. Jin is a vagrant ronin - mysterious, traditional, well-mannered and very strong as well. These two fiercely independent warriors can't be any more different from one another, yet their paths cross when Fuu, a ditzy waitress, saves them from being executed when they are arrested after a violent swordfight. Fuu convinces the two vagrant young men to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sunflowers." And their journey begins. This is a story about love, friendship and courage . . . . NOT! Samurai Champloo is a mixture of old skool Samurai fighting mixed in with a hip-hop feel. Too prove that point, when you purchase the first DVD volume, it comes with a CD soundtrack that sounds like something right out of local hip-hop club.

Please DO NOT hesitate, go out and purchase this DVD, show it to all your buddies, and let them revival in just how cool you are to even know something this cool exsists.

Audiobooks...the hidden media.

Honestly...when is the last time you picked up a book? Come on now, don't lie to yourself. It's probably been forever. The truth is who really has the time for such things? Do you leel like an intellectual fraud everytime you pass a book store? Ever think about audiobooks?

Thought not. Most people don't even think of them as an alternative. Mainly, because there seems to be the thought that there are so few titles out there. This is not the case. Many hardcover books are released simultaneously with their audio counterparts.

The following list of audiobooks criteria not only have great stories, they also have great narrators. Some of the best in my opinion.

Straight Man by Richard Russo. Quite frankly one of the best books I have ever read. The lead character Hank, an college English professor has to deal with students, family and...a homicidal duck.
The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown are also highly recommended....by many, MANY people. Do not these historically based thrillers base you by.
Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind, is one the first fantasy novels I ever read. I hac always been adverse to the genre, given all it's quirks. However this book singlehandedly made me begin to appreciate the genre.
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, though a few years old now, is still a cyberpunk classic.
The Harry Potter Series narrated by Dick Dale is quite possibly the best narrator I have ever heard.
False Memory by Dean Koontz a story about a young computer game designer with a great life that sudden turns wrong.
DreamCatcher by Stephen King, is great to listen to and will make you cringe.
The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan, read by her as well, was the first reall audio book I ever had. I still own it to this day. It's among my favorites.

Stepping outside the 'Box'

Ok...I'll admit it. I'm an Xbox snob. I've tried all the other gaming systems out there, and I still prefer Xbox, and what it has to offer. However, imagine my complete surprise when I found myself owning a Nintendo DS.

After a few days of game play of Feel the Magic and WarioWare Touched, I have to admit I'm hooked. The tiny 5 second mini-games...the clear graphics. *sigh* The worst thing of all? Playstation is releasing it's hand held PSP on February 16, 2005. A mini plasma screen to carry around and ...ah! Just too much to say!

All of this gushing bascically comes down to this: Where is the Xbox hand held?!

Finding Manga/Anime News in America

For those of you new to the manga/anime genre, finding anything indepth and comprehensive in English is tough. Most of the sites out there dedicated to manga/anime are fansites. Lots of images and fan-fic, not much insight or news.

The following is a list of some places to get some great info:

NewType USA is the premier magazine in America for all things manga/anime out there.
SHONEN JUMP Magazine like many Japanese magazines carries six ongoing manga serials each issue.
SHOJO BEAT Magazine is a new magazine that has yet to be released. Made by the same company that puts out SHONEN JUMP, there are big hopes for this one.
Anime Insider /Wizard Magazine are both from the same parent company and both have some good insights.
Anime Fringe is an online magazine. It's a really great alternative to those who don't want the print mags.
Anime News Network has so much info you could get lost in it.

Manga: A Beginners Guide

manga (n) comic; cartoon. Literally, "manga" means "whimsical pictures".

Here in the 'States' comics rule. There is nothing as uniquely American as a kid with a rolled up dog-earred Superman comic book stuff in their back pocket. I don't ever remember a buddy walking around with a rolled up copy of 'InuYasha'.

Could that all be a thing of the past? Are the days of kids toting around reverse read manga with round jelly eyed girls and boys who look more like the girls than the girls be too far away? Not with the way the comic book market is going.

It's true with the success of the Spiderman and X-Men movies, the comic book industry is seeing a good buyers market. But is it enough? Even though old stand bys like Superman, Spiderman and Batman are always solid, what about all the other lines? Teen Titans, Green Latern, Blade? Over the years many, many titles have changed hands, and in doing so many of our beloved characters have changed as well. Very little seems for the better. As a reader, it seems more of the same, just in different colored ink.

Traditionally, comic books have been aimed almost entirley at young males. Why not? They have been created by young males. But what the comic book market seems to forget are females. And females are the ones who have turned to manga.

The market for manga in America is growing tremendously fast. You can't go to any book store nowadays and not see a section devoted to it. the reason? A fresh look. The novelty of reading a book the 'wrong way' is fun. More over are the stories. Manga like Fruits Basket, Ceres, The Wallflower and fast raising manga-ka MegaTokyo keep the readers begging for more.

The following is meant as an introduction to those who would like to get into manga or anime:

A good place to begin to learn and to use as refernece is Anime News Network. This site has tons of information on author, voice actors and characters. Plus they have a great Anime/Manga Encyclopedia.
Understand there are many types of manga out there. the catogories are, Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance (my personal fav), Horror, Mystery and Sci-Fi.
Real manga reads in reverse. From what westerns would call the back of the book. And you read it from right to left. Most mangs will have a page at the end of the book that will explain how to read it.
There are tons of places to buy Manga and Anime online. Just Manga, Robet's Corner Anime Store and of course Amazon.com are some really good places to buy manga and anime. They are long established and offer some of the biggest selections of translated and non-translated books.

So you wanna write your own comic...

Be honest. Haven't you ever picked up a comic book or manga and said, "I could do that." Well...why don't ya?

It's very true that it is hard to break into the comic book world either as a artist or a writer. There are many people out there with great ideas and are just looking for a way to get in. Just that foot in the door. However, for most people, they have no idea where to even start.

As with everything that is professional, getting the right training and education is highly recommended. However, if you don't have the time no the resources to do so, why not try the laymen's version?

The following information is meant as a beginner's guide to trying to make a comic. This may not be fully fleshed out, but if you are truly interested in this you'll go that extra step to find out more.

Dragonberry.com has accumulated a huge link list of comic book publishers.
Find out each publishing houses submission guidelines. Darkhorse Comics has really great submissons guidelines page. They also give you examples in pdf. form.
Take your script to a Comic Book Convention. You heard right. If you feel strongly in your story or art shop it around. Remember, some of the best stories in Hollywood were turned down time and time again. Just keep trying.

(*NOTE* If you are interested in created Manga, there are slightly different roots to getting to publishing house, especially in America. In the weeks to come I will try to compile information about submitting to a Manga publishing house.)

Japan in your ear

Over the years I have collected a great amount of music. Most of it can be divided into two sections: American and Japanese. As those of us in America and Canada can attest too, rock rules. Soul, rap, and country all a close second, but still widely known and easily recognized.

For most of America, however, 'Japanese Rock' is totally foreign, if you pardon the pun. So here is a crash course.

Most of Japan listens to a great deal of J-Pop from artists such as Puffy AmiYumi.
What most Americans don't know is that there are some really kickin' rock bands that are coming out of Japan. One of them are Asian Kung Fu Generation. All this band would have to do is sing in english and they would be a big hit here in the states hands down.
A real veteran of the Japanese music scene are L'Arc~en~Ciel. The lead singer of the group , Hyde, has also done some acting in a movie called Moonchild, along with another J-Pop icon Gackt.
Gackt used to be the lead singer in a goth rock group called Malice Mizer. They are widely known in the goth community.
Hip hop is pretty huge in Japan as well. the group Soul'd Out is one of the biggest draws on the concert scene.

Though there are tons of other japanes artists out there (too many to list here), I thought I would post a good cross section of artists.

Something Old, Something New

Xbox, could quite possibly one of the greast technologies on earth. Don't ask why, it just is. Accept it.

Over the years, I have been lucky enough to have stumbled upon some of the greatest games out there: Ghost Recon I/II, The Rainbow Six Series, Fable, and of course Halo. In the process I was also lucky enough to have met some really great people on Xbox Live!(TM). So my leaning was many toward buying online games. Why not play with some buddies?

Recently, I purchased a copy of Mercenaries. I wasn't expecting much, since it wasn't Xbox Live!(TM) compatible. I guess I was just looking for something new. Was I glad I did. Mercenaries is a combination of Grad Theft Auto, Red faction, Rainbow Six. The Mercenary world is huge! If you see a mountain and you want to climb it to see what's on the other side...you can! Remember Red Faction and the ability to blow things up as many times as you want? Got that too! Want to go Grand theft Auto on a passing car? Do it! Feel like you are missing the action and excitement of Rainbow Six? Don't worry, just whip out your sniper rifle and settle in.

I haven't spent this kind of time on a game since Fable. There is just that much to do on this game. The only draw back I see to this game, is the fact that it isn't Xbox Live!(TM) capable. So if you are looking for a good game outside of online playing, I highly suggest Mercenaries.

This year in Cinema

Movies to be released in 2005 seem to be promising. Sadly, however, you could say that about every year, need I mention such disappointments as Alien vs Predator, The Village , any of the sequels to the Matrix and of course Darkness. Or as I like to call it, "How do I get my money back?".

Luckily, these seems to have more promise.

Let's start off with a little movie called Constantine. Constantine is based on a comic book about a man who's doomed to walk the line between good and evil. From the looks of the trailer and what's been posted on the net about the movie, there seems to be some high hopes for this comic book turned movie.
For those of you who like your Asian movies a bit askew try Kung Fu Hustle, from the same team that brought you Shaolin Soccer. It's the story of a misguided crook turned hero.
Matthew McConaughey is a gung ho and bumbling treasure hunter in Sahara , based on a Clive Clusser novel. Adventure and humor is always a good mix.
Batman Begins, of course is one this years biggest hyped movie. Let's face it none of the batman movies have ever really been outstanding. After so many reincarnations the franchise has turned to all but a joke to movies goers everywhere. That being said with the introduction of director Christopher Nolan (Momento and Insomnia), and the undisputed talented Christian Bale as a young Batman, hopes for this movie are high indeed.
Remakes seem to abound more and more. The 1974 Movie The Longest Yard is no exception. Instead of Burt Reyonlds you have Adam Sandler. Not much to say, just keep your fingers crossed.
Christina Ricci will be having a hard time in Cursed. The story of a estranged brother and sister, and some deep dark scary woods. It's been a while since there have been a good monster movie, this one looks like it could end that.
Adrien Brody will be going on a long strange trip in The Jacket. Brody plays a vet that has the ability to see into the future, at the expense of his own sanity.
What I am personally looking forward to this year is Unleashed, starring Jet Li. Whether or not it's a blockbuster...I don't care, I just love Jet Li.

There you have it. Sure there are a ton of other note worthy films out there, but these movies seem to be the diamonds in the rough. Let's all cross our fingers and hope that at least one of the is this year's Shaun of The Dead.

Comic Con 2005

Every year the San Diego Convention Center plays hosts to the biggest Comic Book Convention in the world. The San Diego Comic Con is where you can purchase and appreciate some of the greatest comic books out there. Moreover, you not only can appreciate the comic book, but the creator themselves - in person! Plus a host of actors and actresses, artists, other fans, and of course the infamous Masquerade Ball (for those into CosPlay). Not to mention the huge Manga-ka and Anime collection of publishers like ToykoPop, Viz and Bandai. Click here to see the list of anime contributors to the Comic Con 2004 Convention.

I'm very lucky to be able to attend this years convention which will take place July 13-17. I will be posting pictures of the trip.

Welcome to the Grand Opening of 'The Notebook'! This first entry to is to establish the topics. The truth is there are no topics. There are many interesting things out there in the big Blog-verse that specialize in a certian topic. If The Notebook must have some sort of subject they will most likely be about Manga, anime and Xbox. The rest is plainly open ended.
